Investment costs (€)#
indexed by: asset, cost_type, node, technology and test case
Description#
The KPI computes the investment costs per asset, i.e., the annualised cost of investing in the installation of an asset. These investments gather three types of costs : CAPEX, the fixed operating cost (FOC) and, storage assets, the storage capex (costs associated to the investments in storage capacities).
This KPI is essential for capacities optimizations. It enables to compare the investments decisions/costs between different optimizations. In addition, it enables to understand the breakdown of investment costs between different technologies or different sectors (for instance electricity vs hydrogen).
Note
The comparison between the investments costs and the operation ones, displayed in System costs or Asset costs depending on the point of view, help to understand the investment decisions. For instance, a peaker investment decision can be justified by a large reduction of loss of load costs.
Warning
This KPI is only available for non-pathway realizations. For pathways, please refer to Overnight investment costs KPI, which focuses not on annualized costs but overnight costs.
Calculation#
The calculation relies on the following formula.
With:
\(capex_{a} = p\_max_{a}.capex\_unit_{a}\)
\(FOC_{a} = p\_max_{a}.FOC\_unit_{a}\)
\(storage\_capex_{a} = s\_max_{a}.storage\_capex\_unit_{a}\)
Where:
\(s\_max_a\) refers to the energy storage capacity of asset \(a\)
\(capex\_unit{a}\) the unitary CAPEX for asset \(a\) (in €/MW/year)
\(storage\_storage\_unit{a}\) the unitary CAPEX for the energy storage of asset \(a\) (in €/MWh/year)
\(FOC\_unit_{a}\) the fixed operating costs of asset \(a\) (in €/MW/year)
For more details on installed capacities capacities and energy storage capacities, see the associated documentation in the respective KPIs, Installed capacities and Energy storage capacities. All assets with a capacity are included in this indicator, whether they are assets for which the capacity is optimized or not.
Global variables and parameters notations definitions can be consulted here.
Warning
Please note that for assets for which the injection and the withdrawal capacity, the installed capacity corresponds to the injection on the energy network. For transmission assets, the installed capacity corresponds to the withdrawal capacity, i.e, the export capacity
Indexing#
The asset index refers to the name of the asset
The cost type refers to the type of costs concerned (CAPEX, FOC, Storage CAPEX)
The node index of this KPI refers to the node in which the asset produces/injects energy
The technology index refers to the technology type of the asset
The test case index corresponds the test case of the realization variables and parameters are taken from
Comments on the absence of energy indexing
Please note that all costs of a given asset must always be considered together not depending on their energies, since some technologies can link two or more energies. For instance, an asset consuming methane and producing electricity is linked to the electricity production as much as to the methane consumption. Therefore, indexing the investment costs by energy would be misleading as we want to maintain additivity in the aggregation of the different index.
