Powering Progress: Artelys Algorithms Enable REN’s Integration into the MARI Platform
Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), the Portuguese Transmission System Operator (TSO), successfully joined the Pan-European MARI platform on November 27, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the integration of balancing energy markets across Europe and enhancing cross-border collaboration.
A Gateway for Iberian and European Balancing Energy Exchange
REN’s connection enables mFRR energy exchanges within the Iberian Peninsula and with Central Europe, supported by RTE (French TSO) through shared Available Transmission Capacities (ATC). The full potential of this integration will be realized once Red Eléctrica (REE), the Spanish TSO, joins MARI in December 2024.
Artelys connecting the dots
Artelys plays a pivotal role in supporting TSOs with their balancing systems.
On one hand, the MARI market clearing algorithm, designed and implemented by Artelys, ensures optimized balancing energy activation and cross-border exchanges.
On the other hand, the local market algorithms used by REN enable seamless mapping of MARI results to the Portuguese power system, as well as efficient redispatching and countertrading:
• MARI Clearing Algorithm: Optimizing balancing energy activation and cross-border exchanges.
• Local Platform for REN: Provides local market, market results disaggregation, redispatching functionalities, and countertrading mechanisms to ensure operational stability and efficiency.
These solutions support a robust end-to-end mFRR process for REN. Learn more about these innovations here.
REN’s successful integration into MARI demonstrates the growing maturity of Europe’s balancing energy markets. The upcoming accession of REE will further enhance regional and continental energy market harmonization.
Artelys is proud to contribute to this groundbreaking initiative, leveraging its expertise to ensure a reliable, efficient, and integrated mFRR process for TSOs and Balancing Service Providers across Europe.
Details on further accessions and updates are available in the MARI accession roadmap
